The month of May is health and wellness month, and next Wednesday, May 27th, is National Senior Health and Fitness day, helping increase awareness for elderly to work on personal well-being to enjoy a long and healthy life. The goal for National Senior Health & Fitness Day is to help keep older Americans healthy and fit as they age.

We all know that there are benefits to exercise and eating healthy, however as we start to age it gets easier to ignore those remarks because most of our life we have associated health and fitness with keeping a nice figure. As we start to age our health isn’t necessarily about having the slimmest figure, or largest muscles, but rather focusing on the long-term benefits it provides the mind and body.

Did you know that exercise can help delay diseases, help ease chronic diseases, and can prevent future problems? It is important to realize that there are several benefits that come from regular exercise. Exercise can also help with high blood pressure, balance problems, or difficulty walking. It is a great way to manage stress and improve your mood.

Don’t be afraid of the term “exercise” because it can be daunting to think it is important to go to a gym for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Think of exercise in the form of taking evening walks on the beach, gardening, or enjoying a relaxing yoga class. If you are unsure of how much exercise you need to have each week, talk to a health specialist to figure out what the best exercises are right for your age, health, and long-term goals.

As we become older don’t forget to take care of your health and well-being. It is important to take advantage of resources around you that can help keep you eating right, exercising, and feeling great. In recognition of Senior Health and Fitness Day take advantage of free local opportunities.

  • Bay View Community, a retirement community in Seattle, is hosting a public health and fitness event on Wednesday, May 27th from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. They will host over 20 different vendors ranging from the American Heart Association, to Seattle Parks & Recreation, and the American Lung Association. There will be health screenings, group exercise classes, and entertainment throughout the day. Enjoy nutritious snacks and win a prize. It is open to the community and located on 11 West Aloha Street, Seattle, WA 98119.

University House in Issaquah, a retirement and assisted living facility, is hosting a Senior Resource Fair on Wednesday, May 27th from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. The event has several vendors for senior services, physical therapists, retailers of senior products, and fitness providers. This event also offers healthy snacks, giveaways, quick screenings, and blood pressure checks. It is located at 22975 SE Black Nugget Road, Issaquah, WA 98029.
