Why Home Care Is the Best Option for Your Elderly Parents

Fedelta Home Care

As the effects of aging begin to show, we inevitably need to give more attention to our health and well-being. If you have been called upon to care for an elderly parent or other loved one, you are no doubt interested in the best way to meet their needs while honoring their legacy and independence. Though there are multiple paths available to you, home care stands out as the best option for the majority of families. First, however, let’s see how the alternatives stand up.

Alternatives to home care

While making plans for an aging loved one, you have most likely come across these options for personal care:

·Nursing homes

Though nursing homes can provide a high level of care, the dramatic loss of independence can be too frustrating (or even frightening) for some to manage. In addition, living in close quarters with other residents can be a drastic adjustment for older adults who are used to independent living.

·Adult day care

These adult care centers allow for small groups of elderly clients to receive supervision and assistance in a group setting. Though such facilities provide good care and assistance, your elderly parent will be forced to leave their home during the day, and services are generally only provided during regular business hours (weekdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm, perhaps). As such, there is little flexibility built into most programs.

·Assisted living

Many elderly adults live happily in assisted living communities. Such facilities give easy access to health and social programs, but this access is limited to those who live within the community’s boundaries. Before moving in, clients must meet the facility’s requirements and will need to purchase a house or apartment within the complex. Since this process requires a significant investment of time, planning  and money, it is rarely a good first step for seniors in need.

Flexible home care options are the best way to meet your needs

Almost 90% of seniors surveyed reported that they would prefer to age in their own homes. The following benefits are what make home care stand out as the gold standard for your aging loved ones.

·Flexibility

Home care can mean anything from a few short visits per week to a full-time, live-in caregiver. As such, there is an infinite number of ways to coordinate a plan of care that meets your family’s exact needs.

·Independence

Because they are able to continue living in their own home, your aging loved ones can enjoy freedom and independence while receiving home care. Instead of having to adapt to the strict schedule of a nursing home or the unfamiliar guidelines of an assisted living community, they can continue with a routine that is comfortable for them.

·Cost

The alternative options that we have listed above come with initial costs ranging from thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars – not to mention the need for a long-term commitment. In contrast, home care services can be adjusted to meet your needs and budget, and there is no requirement to commit to (much less pay for) long-term services that may not be a good fit for your loved one.

·Ease of entry

Since nursing homes and assisted living communities require significant planning, they are a poor starting point for most families. Home care, in comparison, can be initiated with a simple phone call, and services can begin almost immediately after consultation is completed.
